I have always wanted to make a list like this. These are my top 10 sexiest women of my era or at least the ones that have influenced me.  Its a part of what influenced me to learn about Boudoir Photography.  I always wanted to know how they made those pictures look so good.  Please keep in my that this is my list and my opinion.  There are many other beautiful women that could have easily made the list.

I also want to say that there is a HUGE difference in beauty & sexy.  I have been lucky enough to photograph some beautiful women that just weren’t sexy, and I have photographed some average looking women that are extremely sexy!  The way they walk, the way they talk, the confidence they have makes them sexy.  The reason my wife is not on the list is because she is numero uno and then that would make the list 11 ;~)  I hope you enjoy the selections and would love to hear about your top ten.

I’ve been meaning to blog about this for about a month now — ever since I edited an image of a GORGEOUS fitness model that we shot for her portfolio. One single image took over an hour to edit, and there was literally nothing wrong with her body. I spent all that time editing… the very obvious remains of poorly-applied self tanner on her hands.

More often than not, female models (and male) with whom we work try to achieve a tan before our shoot. Tanned skin looks healthy, and we have nothing against a model with naturally tanned skin. An appropriate color of spray tan, done by a professional, usually has a good result as well. However, when a client tries to apply a spray or rub-on tan before a shoot, the result is always disaster. Yes, always.

I hear the protest from our clients and glamour models now, “But I use self tanner all the time and I know how to do it — it isn’t streaky or blotchy and looks natural!” My answer to that is, Yes, I believe that you can do a good job and that it looks natural.… under normal viewing conditions. However, being under color-balanced photography lights is NOT normal viewing conditions. Skin will reflect and absorb light in a photograph with much starker contrast than a viewer would see ‘in person’. This means that no matter how carefully you apply self-tanner, the camera will see uneven tone, blotches, and areas of unnatural color (usually orange). An additional peril of self tanner is that the user often chooses the darkest shade available, which is usually much too dark to look natural. The best spray tan deepens and intensifies existing skin color; it doesn’t dramatically change it.

The moral of the story: if you want a tan for your shoot, then start tanning (either in the sun or in a salon) well before the shoot, so that you have time to naturally build color while doing minimal damage. Know that even when a sunburn has faded to the eye, skin will still looked burned in a photograph — the camera is relentless. If you prefer a spray tan, spend the few extra bucks to have it applied by a professional. We know of several spray tan professionals, one of whom will do an application for only $25. And if you insist that you are the one person who really, really can do a good job of applying your own tanning spray or lotion, then I will allow you to do so… but be prepared to pay for excessive editing time, because it WILL be necessary :-p

The professional photographer utilizes a variety of tools to make his/her trade successful. Among the most important and least talked about is the definitive color and flair offered by a professional make-up artist. His work can make the difference between success and failure. Or perhaps, more accurately, professional makeup can make the difference between a stunning set of photos and a ho-hum set.

Many models apply their own makeup and feel comfortable doing so. However, the expertise and insight offered by a third person, who is also professionally trained, can make a contribution not available otherwise. For example, often a model uses an application that she developed over time, not realizing it may have become outdated and is not appropriate for the unique requirements of a photo shoot. The professional makeup artist is always current on fashion makeup and is able to use that information to lay the groundwork for a successful ‘look’.

Hair & MakeUp

Every model, whether male or female, has something unusual and unique about her/his appearance. It may be bone structure, or contour of eyes or mouth, or shape and tilt of nose… or some other eye-catching feature. The model’s hair may be unusually striking in color or texture or length or shape. Whatever features the model brings to the photo shoot can be emphasized and strengthened by a professional makeup artist. And that emphasis can then be highlighted by the photographer with light, pose and angle.

The professional makeup artist introduces herself to the model, creating a sense of trust and comfort with her expertise. She asks what the model likes and dislikes about her appearance, and discusses what visual effects they want to create together. The makeup artist knows he cannot accomplish his work without the cooperation of the model.

‘Looks’ are also created with makeup. Innocent, foxy, inviting, beguiling, stern and scolding, and many more, can all be generated with makeup. We’ve talked elsewhere about the role the model plays as a sales agent. Frequently, photos from a shoot will be used commercially, to sell a product. The ‘look’ resulting from the combination of physical attributes and makeup application will make a statement about the product. The makeup artist will create a look that is consistent with the product to be sold.

The photographer knows when to snap the shutter to achieve a striking photo that captures every element in a ‘just right’ place. Equally important, the makeup artist knows how to bring out striking qualities in the face and hair to make the total look ‘just right’. Color added to face and around eyes in the right way will make a feature look larger or smaller, depending on how color is applied; cheeks can be made to stand out or recede; eyes can be made to look larger or smaller; a round face can be made thinner and a thin face rounder. Outlining eyes or mouth will create emphasis, again depending on application and heaviness or thinness of lines.

He/she also knows how to minimize physical attributes that could detract from a quality photo. Makeup can camouflage all kinds of physical sins! But the makeup artist knows whether the ‘sin’ should be camouflaged or emphasized and her work is completed accordingly.

The model and photographer often cooperate with the makeup artist in decisions regarding how makeup is applied and hair is designed. The professional makeup artist isn’t a prima dona; she knows input from others is important to the total success of the photo shoot. The combination of her people skills and professional expertise contribute significantly to the success of the work.

Every model needs a portfolio. Without a good portfolio, it is very difficult for a model to get paying jobs. A portfolio consists of pictures of you in different settings and locations. This showcases the variety of work for which you are available.

A great portfolio can take some time. Nothing happens overnight. You will need to build your portfolio by selecting your best photos from shoots with several different photographers. Your portfolio needs to consist of a wide variety of photos. A good portfolio should contain anywhere form 10 to 30 photos. You will need a head shot with no make-up. This will showcase the natural you, and is something the client can look at as a blank canvas. Also you will need an incredible body shot in a swimsuit, lingerie or form fitting clothing to showcase your body. These two photos are probably the most important in your portfolio because every client needs to view these types of photos before coming to a decision.

The images in your portfolio also need to showcase a variety of styles. You may want to show versatility by taking some outside photos with a bright, commercial, cute look. Then take a picture inside with a black background with darker make-up giving the more mysterious kind of image. Also having different make-up and wardrobe in every picture shows the different looks you can create. Creating the variety is the key to an incredible portfolio.

To find the right photographers, research on the web and ask around. Once you find one that seems suitable ask about the kind of work he specializes in because you may just want to use one photographer for glamour photography and another for a more commercial look. In deciding upon using the photographer don’t forget to ask basic questions about wardrobe, hair and make-up. Also ask if he/she edits the photos, as this may play a big role in the final outcome of the picture. Always ask to see several samples of their work.

The pricing in a photographer should be reasonable. The photographer shouldn’t be ridiculously priced, neither should he be cheap. The more money you spend on a photographer usually reassures you that you will get what you pay for, but make sure to ask if you will be able to re-shoot without charge if you are unhappy with the final images.

Once you have obtained all your photos, you should put them in a model portfolio book. Yes, a print portfolio is still very important for models, even in this day of web portfolios. Make sure to choose a quality, professional-looking portfolio book, in at least an 8x10 size. It is often advisable to create two print portfolios, as often a booker will keep your portfolio for several days and you don’t want to be without one if you get a call from another potential employer. Also, if you do both glamour and commercial work, consider keeping those print portfolios separate, as a potential commercial booker may be put off by suggestive glamour images.

Does a professional photographer really need a model photo release  form?  How does it protect the model?  Are there times when releases aren’t necessary?  How do you know?

Professional Photographers today are finding both legal protection as well as clarity with use of model photo release forms.  Such forms state the purpose for which a model’s images will be used and where they will be placed.  Her signature gives the requisite permission to the photographer.  Neither party can misunderstand what is explicitly stated.  The release becomes a guideline for how the photographer will handle the pictures.

A lot of images are uploaded daily to internet web sites, and the release becomes especially important.  Surprises are great at Christmas and birthdays; they are not great when a model clicks on a web site and sees pictures of herself that she didn’t know would appear.  A generic statement in the release that includes all possible media and venues eliminates the surprise element.  The model photo release form makes clear the photographer is in charge of where the images will be placed.

Models pose for commercial shots daily.  Their images will appear in printed advertisements, brochures and posters advertising a product or service, any product that will be ultimately sold to the public, and any eCommerce sites (such as photography), to name a few.  We are not aware of litigation surrounding permission or lack thereof for use of photos.  However, we believe obtaining written permission from models to use photographs of them is good insurance.  Potential legal hassles can be avoided fairly easily if a model release form is standard operating procedure.

Non-commercial uses of pictures of models poses another set of questions.  If we look at photo journalism for example, we see photos being used in articles that are sold for a photographer’s profit.  If photos become a story that is sold to a magazine or newspaper or ezine, is a release necessary, especially if one or more photos feature a person?  The owner of the story is making a profit from the sale of the article/pictures.  Does the person featured have a proprietary interest in the pictures?

We believe a case can be made for being respectful and having consideration for others, especially when their images are being used for the benefit of another.  This probably isn’t a legal matter as much as it is just treating people with respect, whether it’s a professional model or a passerby on the street that you catch at just the right time for a spectacular photo.

Securing permission is wise even when you photograph strangers.  Most professional photographers keep digital files of their work for use in the unknown future.  Such use may include commercial projects that weren’t defined at the time the shot was taken.  File shots that may be perfect for commercial use later will need release forms; otherwise, their commercial value is nil.  Obtaining that permission at the time the photo is taken allows for limitless possibilities in the future.

As photographers who shoot extensively with glamour and bikini models, we often have non-model clients who are interested in being shot in that same style. We have now created special Boudoir Photo Sessions to be able to provide these clients with both the ‘model experience’ and images of which they will be proud.

Why Boudoir Photography? Many of these clients are not model-perfect, and can’t be shot in the traditional glamour or bikini style. Offering boudoir photo sessions allows us to create beautiful, sensual, sexy images for them, without being overtly sexual or creating images that are non-flattering to the client.

Most of our Boudoir clients have never been part of a professional photo session, and are both nervous and excited at the same time. The prospect of having sensual images to share with their husband, fiancé, or boyfriend holds tremendous appeal, but they’re also extremely self-conscious and fearful of looking old, overweight, or unattractive.

As the photographer, you need to create an atmosphere that is relaxing and non-intimidating! There is a fine line, however, of which you must be extremely cautious. Playing soft music is pleasant, but if the client hears music with sexual overtones, they may begin to feel uncomfortable. If you are a male photographer doing boudoir photo sessions, a female assistant can be invaluable in helping the client stay comfortable. Also, remember that a boudoir client is not used to being treated the way you may treat a professional model; we often touch models to adjust a piece of their clothing or hair that is out of place, and they are quite used to it. However, touching or adjusting a boudoir client without asking can make the client feel extremely uncomfortable and ruin the session. Always remember, even if this client is posing in lingerie on a bed, treat them with the respect you’d give an executive client in a boardroom shot.

As far as the technical aspects of Boudoir shooting go, we recommend shooting at an open aperture for a soft, shallow depth-of-field. This allows you to create a soft, sensual feel for the client. Muted backgrounds and colors can also help create an overall soft feel for the client. For lighting, try to create a soft falloff of light from one side of the image to the other, with suggestive shadowing and a lot left to the imagination! When posing the client, offer feedback such as ‘that pose is so flattering to you!’ and ‘You look so marvelous and relaxed on this background, it really suits you well’. Avoid using phrases like ‘You look so sexy!’, or ‘That is so hot!’, which may have the unintended effect of creating tension in the client.

Expanding your business to include boudoir photography is a smart move for the glamour and bikini model photographer, as long as you always remember that your boudoir client isn’t a professional model, even if you are shooting them in the same setting and style you use for the pros you shoot!

Remember the movie “Zoolander”? In that hilarious Ben Stiller comedy, male model Derek Zoolander had several trademark ‘looks’, all of which were exactly the same. As a model, you need to be able to provide a variety of different looks and expressions in order to be versatile enough to hire again and again. Here are some tips to avoid the “Magnum is Blue Steel” trap:

• Practice in front of a mirror! Modeling is work, and part of that work is practice and preparedness. Practice full smiles, half smiles, pouts, snarls, dreamy eyes, surprised eyes, mouth open, mouth half-open, and every variety you can dream up!

• Learn how to use your hands. Practice how to elegantly place your hands in your hair, on your neck, framing your face, and so on. Wearing jewelry at a shoot? Pretend you’re shooting for a jewelry store and ‘showcase’ the items you’re wearing. Learn how to use your hands without placing the full back of your hand or your full palm directly at the camera. Those two big, flat patches of skin will always draw attention away from your face. Learn to keep your hands angled away from the camera lens.

• Remember, you don’t have to be looking into the lens in every shot. Keep variety in your images by learning how to glance away from the camera, without turning your head to a profile shot. Practice looking away without letting your eyeballs hit the corner of your eye; images look best when the viewer can see whites on both sides of your eyeballs.

• Stuck for a different look during a shoot? Practice saying the vowels, which creates different shapes in your mouth. A long, drawn-out ‘a’ creates a pretty, open-mouth smile, while a ‘u’ creates a sexy pout. Go ahead and say them out loud… it works wonders!

• Most importantly, don’t be afraid to take a bad shot. In today’s digital world, you don’t ‘waste film’ with a bad facial expression. As a professional glamour photographer, I know I much prefer dumping a few bad shots from a model who experiments with a variety of looks, to having a full set of great images from a model who only gives me ‘one look’.
Yes, most models find one look that always works for them… but once you’ve give a photographer a great shot with that expression, move on and give them more to work with!

Just like every model needs his or her print portfolio, every model needs a composite card. They are essential in acquiring jobs and clients.

Composite cards are also referred to as zed cards. Models, and often actors, who want to market themselves use these cards. These cards come in different shapes and sizes, so a model or actor is able to customize his or her card using their own creativity. A standard card ranges from postcard-sized up to full 8x10. Consider keeping your comp card between postcard and 5x7 size; anything smaller or larger may be discarded by an agent simply because it doesn’t fit well into their pile!

There are several ways a model can go about designing their comp card. If you have an agent, they will almost certainly have a pre-made template design for your comp card that they will help you put together. There are also software programs available for creating composite cards, and if you’re not a do-it-yourself kind of person, you can work together with a photographer to put together your composite card. There are also professional design services available online, where all you need to do is upload your images and they will take care of the design and printing.

Your composite card in a way can serve as your business card or portfolio as well. You want to design your composite card like your portfolio; you want the best pictures you have to be on your composite card. Design your comp card in a way that will reflect what you do best, but also showcase a variety of different pictures, implying that you can adapt to any kind of work. A typical card has a large head shot on the front and a variety of smaller images on the back. Also on the front of the composite card are listed basic statistics like height, weight and measurements. These stats are very important so make sure you put them on your card.

When visiting your agent, or any other agency, it’s important to look the part of a serious professional model. Having an updated, complete, professional comp card is an important aspect of ‘looking the part’. Make sure not to overlook any of these small aspects of being a pro; it could make the difference in getting the job!

It is no secret that the 80s fashion was definitely an era of loud clothing, 80s hair and make up was over the top. Madonna and Cyndi Lauper kicked off the mainstream looks of the decade and thousands of girls everywhere were frantically trying to look and dress the same. Time has indeed moved on since then and fashions have changed a lot, but what if you want to recreate that look? Here we detail all the essential steps you need to get looking authentically 80s:

80’s Hair and MakeUp

1.) Firstly, to start off the 80s makeup look, you need to gather all of your tools of the trade. You will need some eyeliner (preferably black, although other colors work too), it’s up to your taste entirely, eye shadow (preferably either a very bright colour or a very dark color as these will give the best effect), mascara, liquid foundation, powder, eyelash curler, makeup brushes and of course — lip gloss.

2.) Now you need to wash your face so that it is clean. Use a mild cleanser for this and make sure that your face is properly clean using warm water. Next, please ensure that your face is fully dry before applying the 80s makeup, it just won’t work doing it on a damp/wet face.

3.) Next, cover up any blemishes (such as under-eye circles and other dark spots) using the liquid foundation. Whatever you do, don’t try and cover up and spots and pimples by caking the foundation on them, this will look silly. For best results, apply the makeup with a proper makeup sponge. Using the cheap one that comes with the makeup or your fingers will not look as good.

4.) Take your 80s makeup brush, and apply powder all over your face. Try and make sure that you get a good even finish and that it is blended in properly.

5.) Now, using the eyeliner color of your choice, apply some eyeliner to your top and bottom eyelids and also to the area of skin directly beneath your eyes. Make sure that you put on a significant amount — because you now need to smear it. Using your fingers, gently smear the makeup to give that great 80s look. One good tip you can use to stop it dripping is to brush some black eye shadow over the liner, it works a treat.

6.) Using the eyelash curler, curl your eyelashes upwards until they stay up by themselves. Then use the mascara to brush it onto the lashes, slowly and going up until you achieve that great striking 80s makeup look.

7.) The eye shadow can be applied as you would naturally; it’s up to you how you do it as you will have your own preferences on how you go about it. Although make sure that it at least comes up to your brow line for maximum effect.

8.) Go ahead and finish the look off by applying the lip gloss, preferably it will be the glittery, frosted type that will really finish the whole look off nicely.

9.) Go wild with your hairspray and tease your hair until it looks as you want it. Then, your 80’s make up and hair is complete.

The comfort zone for models is no different from any other profession. Comfort zone is the imaginary boundary that people create for themselves within which they believe they have to function. It’s a defense mechanism that keeps us from becoming anxious. A model’s comfort zone is probably more expansive because of the exhibitive nature of her work. Being comfortable exposing her body to a variety of people has to lie within her comfort zone. The average woman does not pose in scantily clad lingerie and get paid for it. That’s outside her comfort zone.

Models remain in their comfort zones for the same reason the rest of us do. We manage our anxiety by staying with the familiar and comfortable. We feel secure doing the same thing over and over. Unless we are challenged, we don’t have any reason to change. Most models create comfort zones in clothing, facial expressions, body language and appealing look (however they might define that). Anxiety about the new and different is too difficult to face, so they behave in the same ways consistently to avoid having to feel anxious. They convince themselves internally that they ‘cannot handle’ doing something unusual or different.

We also avoid changing behavior because we’re concerned about what someone else will think. Comfort zones become personal prisons because we’re concerned about acceptance from others. Models must be concerned about response from those viewing their pictures; it’s their livelihood. If a model does something new and different for a photo shoot, what is going to be the response? We are all conditioned to believe we cannot live without approval from others. If a model has been doing something for months or years that works for her, why should she change? Most models stay within their defined comfort zones so they do not have to risk losing approval and potentially their livelihood.

Complacency is the real risk for a model dealing with her comfort zone. She feels secure within her imaginary boundaries. She can become lazy without knowing it. She’s comfortable there; why should she go some place where she is uncomfortable? In the extreme, she can become apathetic and the resulting photos show her inertia.

How can a model take a look at her comfort zone and decide to step out? Highly successful people step out of their comfort zones with regularity. They identify a goal they want to achieve and that path requires new and different behavior patterns to reach the goal. A question she might ask herself in confronting her initial rise in anxiety is, What is the worst thing that can happen? Talking over possible answers to that question with her friends could prove helpful. She might more easily manage the risk if she knows what could potentially result from the change she is considering. She might also discover the beliefs supporting her current comfort zone are unfounded. For example, she might discover her livelihood is not really threatened.

The more entertaining question to consider is, What is the best case scenario? This issue is easier to consider, and again, her friends might be helpful with possible responses. The enticement of something good or even really great could be just the impetus needed to make the change.

Although the comfort zone is an imaginary set of boundaries, the accompanying anxiety trying to step outside the box is very real. Don’t take huge leaps in your attempts to redirect your career; one or two steps at a time is a better plan. Check out how new behaviors feel, and then ask yourself if your comfort zone can begin to be redefined to include something you never considered possible in your life.

Many women in the world of female modeling have interesting issues to deal with on a daily basis. One of those problems is getting rid of unwanted undergarment lines. These lines occur when a model is wearing tight-fitting clothing.
